Greek Flora and Fauna

We were in Greece from the 20th December 2002 to the 6th March 2003.

On the island of Corfu we found some super crabs on the rocky shores:

And 'spring' flowers (in December!). On the left is a Peacock Anemone, and on the right an Iris Pumila.

Saw this Red Admiral on the coast of Corfu:

And managed to creep up close enough to this Blackcap to get this rather blurry photo:

This frog posed much more patiently, it is probably the Common Tree frog, Hyla arborea::

As did this grasshopper:

And chrysalises never move!

Also spotted this centipede (Scolopendra cingulatus) marching down the road. It is the largest European centipede and not to be messed with!

And found this tiny lizard sheltering under our tent flysheet. It is a Snake Eyed Skink Ablepharus kitaibellii:

Jeanette found this shore crab on the beach near Epidaurus:

And we saw a selection of small flowers, even in January!

Found this toad (Bufo viridis) under a rock:

Striking red Scarlet Elf Cup (Sarcoscypha coccinea) fungus found at Meteora, near Trikala. Each cup is 1-2cm across.

Saw this Crested lark (Galerida cristata) hopping around outside the Alistrati caves:
