These hoppers could fly as well as hop, with bright red wings:
This one seemed to be trying to lay its eggs on the road:

And another, Altai and Tuva were full of them...
These are the biggest insects I have ever seen, we saw a few on the road south of Ulan Ude. They are "desert fat crickets", or in Russian, "stepnoi tolstun". The latin name is "Deracantha onos pall."

A "sticky" grasshopper from Thailand, like the Laotian one above, either Truxalis or Acrida sp., exposed and camoflaged!
